Giving Grace

When I think of giving grace, I imagine my family sitting around the dinner table holding hands and bowing our heads.  We give gratitude and reflect on the many blessings we have had that day.

The other day, I asked my students what giving grace meant to them.  They said that sometimes it means being patient and forgiving. That’s when I realized that grace does not just happen during meals.  There are so many times when grace happens in my very own classroom.  Every day we reflect on all of the good things we are doing.  My students and I make sure to celebrate each other.

Other times, I discuss the importance of patience and forgiveness amongst the students.  When they work collaboratively with each other, there are times when the plan does not work the way it was intended.  Instead of getting upset, I teach my students to give one another grace and to reflect on the positive aspects of their work.   By seeing the good and recognizing the full potential of all of my students, my students and I are giving grace in class every day.

  1. What a beautiful reflection! You are teaching them a lesson in collaboration they will use for the rest of their lives.

  2. What a wonderful lesson for your students to see you model and to practice themselves. Often during cooperative learning, students get frustrated with each other and don’t know how to encourage their peers. It’s so much easier to see the negative! A wise woman (whose office is next to your classroom) told me, “Give yourself some grace.” When I am struggling, I often repeat that phrase in my mind, reminding myself to slow down, be patient, and forgive myself when I make mistakes.

  3. Molly, I have learned in my life that this is one of the most powerful gifts we have – for others and for ourselves. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post. Have a grace-filled day!

  4. Molly, How beautiful this truth of grace is. You have modeled this so well to your students, and you have also been a shining example of grace to all of us here at Trinity. Thank you for reminding us of such an important lesson in life.

  5. I love this post, Molly. As I read it, I thought of a student yesterday who in the middle of the tornado scare (we were in safe-shelter for over an hour) got very upset and frustrated. His friends could have easily made fun, gotten upset too, or had a whole host of other reactions. What I loved to see was that the friend next to him put his hand gently on his back, his teacher came over to show him the radar of the weather in the area, and the girl next to him gave him her water bottle for a sip of water. All three showed grace in their own third grade way and all three were models to those who were watching — both adults and kids.

Thanks for posting and inviting me to reflect too…
