It Depends

In my life before Trinity, in the world of public accounting, I often had clients ask me if certain expenses were tax deductible.  Whether I knew the answer or not, my response was always “It depends” which is standard CPA language to buy time while you’re trying to figure out just what the client is asking you. The expression “it depends” opens up my mind to all kinds of questions of what, why, where, when and whatever that fifth question is that doesn’t begin with a “w.”  I visualize a circuit board with lights flashing in random patterns as questions continually pop into my mind.

I had a recent experience where the questions were not really popping in my mind fast enough.  I noticed my granddaughter’s favorite toy looked a lot like Olivia the pig.  Olivia reminded me of a book I used to read to my children about why pigs are pink.  When questioned, my son remembered the book; however, neither of us could remember the title of the book.  I searched the library for “pink pigs;” no hits. I expanded my search to “why are pigs pink?” on Google, but still no title.

When I found the title to the book, I was on Amazon’s website.  I had just finished reading the reviews of the books Jill posted on Trinity’s summer reading list.  To be more precise, I had just finished reading the review on Make Just One Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions.   It came to me that I was not asking the right questions.  I remembered my son said his favorite part of the book was when the piglet kicked his ketchup sandwich over the playground fence at school.  Should I be searching for ketchup and pigs?  Voila! Mrs. Pig’s Bulk Buy by Mary Rayner.

Even though I am not in the classroom, I feel nurtured at Trinity.  I like how we are child centered.  I like how we foster a lifetime of learning for our students as well as for everyone associated with Trinity.  I like how we share ideas on blogs such as this one.  There is so much knowledge, yet there is so much unknown.   Are we asking the right questions? It depends…
