As part of our practice, we offer in-house summer professional learning around literacy and numeracy.

There are two strands that both focus on the workshop model and conferring with students in literacy and in math.  Tiffany Coleman (@TColemanReads)and Lisa Eickholdt (@LisaEickholdt) will each join us on June 5th and 6th, respectively, to further our work in conferring.  On June 7th, Marsha Harris (@MarshaMac74) will round out the literacy work with a session on differentiation.  Jill Gough (@jgough) and Becky Holden (@bholden86) will facilitate three days of interactive math learning so that it parallels the work in literacy.

2017-18 Goals:

  • Continued work on vertical alignment to create a balanced literacy curriculum
  • Expanding knowledge of best practices and their role in our current program (mini-lesson, conferring, small/strategy group, read-aloud, mentor text/sentences)
  • Sharing work with grade level teams to grow our entire community as teachers
  • Raising the level of teacher confidence and gaining clarity in what deepening learning means in literacy through assessment practices

Action Steps:

  • Study and participate in discussions around the Units of Study by Lucy Calkins and Reading/Writing Strategies by Jen Serravallo
  • Analyze best practices from #TCWRP and utilize the materials/videos provided
  • Refine and improve learning progression and other assessment practices for vertical alignment and knowing your learners as readers and writers.
  • Make conferring toolkits and personal sketchbook

Responsibilities:

  • To collaborate with the Director of Curriculum to plan committee meetings, team meetings, and professional development
  • To work as a team to meet the above goals
  • To develop a plan for sharing, coaching, and teaching grade level members to further equip them with the tools to further gain confidence as a reader/writer/speaker/listener.

  • 3rd grade is completing their informational books and
    the students are excited with how their
    published books are turning out!
  • 5th grade reorganized their reader’s notebooks
    into sections (anchor charts, classwork, homework).
    The students feel that the organization is helpful and
    they are excited about their new notebooks.
  • 1st grade enjoyed their nonfiction reading unit and
    are now starting their on demand prompt for nonfiction writing.
  • 2nd grade is writing nonfiction books about force and motion.
  • 4th grade has been working on their nonfiction unit and
    are using their reader’s notebooks to keep graphic organizers.
  • Kindergarten just completed persuasive writing and is about
    to begin how to books.
  • Learning team is working on writing stamina and organization

  • Kindergarten: Had their writing celebration.
    Every child read their book and the students that
    were listening were a great audience.
  • 5th Grade: Excited to have completed their narrative unit.
  • 4th Grade: Completed their first unit.
3:10 10 min Any Observations?

  • Observation in Adams/Stewart: S were writing
    a lot and showed a lot of improvement from kindergarten.
  • Michelle Observation: Great lesson in 4th grade.
  • Observation in Megan’s room in K: Neat to see
    the progress they have made in writer’s workshop.
    Turn in talk was a great way for all of the students to participate.
  • Observation in April’s room:
    The routine seemed very familiar to the kids.

  • What went well?
    • Glad to see the mini lesson as well as conferences.
    • It was helpful to see a mini lesson and
      then talk to Lisa afterwards.

      grade level appropriate.

      review the structure.
    • Observe teachers who are a few lesson ahead of

      writing and find goals for your students.
